Drawing Hands || Victor Perard

Consisting of over 1000 line drawings of hands at rest and in a variety of actions, this is a genuinely useful guide that deserves to be reprinted – it first appeared in 1940.

Following a nicely-done introduction to drawing, including a guide to anatomy, the approach is simple and there are context illustrations as well as props – such as tools – when they’re required. Apart from the odd caption, there are no words and they’re not required. Frankly, if you need to be told what an illustration is, it’s failed.

There are about as many examples here as you could wish for or think of. The big advantage over similar books that are illustrated with photographs is that you get not only the example, but also an idea of how to render it, including the hatching and shading that give shape and form.
